Dentist or dentist - what's the difference?
In many countries, including Poland, a dentist and a dentist are persons with the same competence and authority to provide dental care. For many years, however, these concepts were understood differently, which can be confusing for some patients.
The difference is only in when the medical studies were completed, as the EU regulations were harmonised in 2002 and with them the concepts of dentist i dentist. In Poland, in order to become a dentist or a dentist, you need to complete a 5-year master's degree in medicine and dentistry. Their graduates receive a diploma and the professional title of dentist. Then, in order to be able to practice in their profession, they need to complete a 2-year postgraduate internship in a dental practice. Only after completing this and passing the relevant examinations can you obtain a authorisation to practise independently. A qualified dentist can apply for specialisation in one of the fields, for example: conservative dentistry with endodontics, dental prosthetics, orthodontics or periodontics.
