How do you restore a tooth crown?

Reconstruction of the crown of a tooth is performed after mechanical damage, such as chipping, cracks or fractures. Reconstruction is also performed after endodontic treatment due to advanced caries. It is also a procedure allowing aesthetics of teeth to be improved - it allows unevenness, fissures and discolouration to be hidden. It is worth undergoing this dental procedure not only for aesthetic reasons, but also for health reasons. Find out more about the restoration of tooth crowns later in this post.

Crowns, veneers and dental bridges

Crowns, veneers and prosthetic bridges are the most commonly chosen methods for restoring a tooth. They are selected primarily according to the specific nature and severity of the damage.

Prosthetic crowns are most commonly used when there has been discolouration or fracture of a tooth (e.g. after caries or long root canal treatment). These are specialised onlays, which can be made of metal and finished with porcelain, zirconia or all-ceramic - imitating a natural tooth. This is a way of reconstructing damage that cannot be restored with fillings.

Veneers make it possible to cover up defects such as cavities, uneven tooth surfaces, discolouration and diastemas. They are mainly used for teeth in the anterior segment. They come in the form of thin flakes of porcelain that are permanently fixed to the teeth. Due to the properties of the porcelain layer, which diffuses light, veneers are deceptively similar to natural teeth.

Prosthetic bridges are the restoration method most often used when several teeth have been damaged or lost. These are interconnected prosthetic crowns that are permanently fixed in the mouth. To create a bridge, the patient's teeth are used as pillars on which the reconstructed crowns are placed. However, it is also possible to use dental implants for this purpose.

Any method of restoring a dental crown usually requires several visits to the dental surgery, usually around three. In doing so, it is very important that any diseases of the teeth and gums have been treated beforehand.
